Oman has launched several AI pilot projects in the healthcare sector, aimed at improving service quality, diagnostic accuracy, and operational efficiency across public healthcare facilities.
A central component of this effort is a nationwide AI-based programme for the early detection of diabetic retinopathy. Implemented by the Ministry of Health in partnership with Bahwan Healthcare and Muscat Pharmacy, the initiative screens patients across public healthcare facilities. According to officials, the programme has reduced waiting times, enhanced diagnostic accuracy, and expanded access to eye-care services. Oman is now the third country globally to deploy AI-powered diabetic retinopathy screening at a national level.
In medical imaging, Khoula Hospital has introduced an AI-enabled radiology platform in collaboration with the technology company Civilization. The system analyses spinal MRI scans and generates preliminary diagnostic reports, supporting radiologists and orthopaedic specialists in clinical decision-making while streamlining reporting workflows.
The healthcare projects have been launched as pilot initiatives supported by implementing companies, allowing government entities to adopt AI technologies through controlled, low-risk deployments. The approach highlights the role of public-private partnerships in advancing digital healthcare transformation.
The Ministry has said the initiatives aim to strengthen healthcare service quality, improve operational efficiency, and ensure secure data management within national systems. The projects align with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and support the Sultanate’s ambition to position itself as a regional leader in healthcare innovation and advanced digital technologies.
