Diary: Ithnain-hosted podcast interview on AI in healthcare and what lies ahead

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Hanan Al Taib on a blazing hot day in Riyadh, in a podcast hosted by Saudi healthtech company ithnain. We explored the future of healthcare and AI across the Middle East and beyond.

Among other things, we discussed Saudi Arabia’s ambitious digital health transformation under Vision 2030 — a sweeping effort to modernise healthcare through advanced technologies, data infrastructure, and policy reform.

The conversation also explored real-world innovation in action, with examples like Amplifai Health and Lapsi Health, the regional health information exchange Malaffi in Abu Dhabi, and DeepMind’s AlphaFold — a breakthrough in protein structure prediction that’s opening new frontiers in drug discovery and personalised medicine.

We also touched on the rapidly approaching threshold of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), raising the question of whether society is truly ready for such a leap.

In the healthcare context especially, the discussion reinforced the growing urgency for responsible AI — an approach that goes beyond local regulation and calls for serious, sustained global cooperation to ensure safety, transparency, and equity in its deployment.
