Chinese digital health company Ping An Good Doctor has introduced “Ping An Xin Yi,” an AI-powered digital doctor service offering 24/7 access to AI-assisted health consultations via the Ping An Health app.
Ping An Xin Yi uses advanced digital twin technology to create digital avatars of real-world doctors, allowing users to receive professional medical and health advice in real-time, from the comfort of their homes, without the need for appointments.
Patients can interact with the avatars—who replicate the image and voice of real medical experts—via text, voice, or video, enjoying a convenient, time-saving, and cost-effective service to access on-demand consultations 24/7, simplified report and lab result interpretation, and personalised medication reminders.
The service initially covers general practice along with three major specialties: proctology, hepatobiliary surgery, and obstetrics and gynaecology. Currently, avatars of the following specialists are available: Dr Wang Ling, a 2024 ‘Golden Bian Que’ Top 100 TCM Practitioner, and Dr Wang Chengyou, a hepatobiliary surgeon based in Shenzhen.
Powered by a sophisticated LLM trained on extensive medical data, the system uses natural language processing, machine learning, and medical document recognition. After comprehensive training, the AI assistant is able to engage in real-time interactions with patients.
Taking Dr. Wang Ling’s AI avatar as an example, the AI assistant is built upon a foundation of an LLM and digital twin technology, with a three-layered data training structure.
The first layer consists of a specialised knowledge base, drawing from Ping An Health’s five major medical databases, which cover diseases, prescriptions, medical products, medical resources, and personal health, encompassing 37,000 diseases and 420,000 disease-related terms. This also includes a wealth of literature, clinical guidelines, and accumulated professional knowledge.
The second layer is Dr. Wang Ling’s personal knowledge base, derived from his own materials, including social media content, filmed materials, and published literature.
The third layer involves personalised fine-tuning involving Dr. Wang Ling himself, including manual annotation, review of online responses, and training with the doctor’s video content.
When necessary, it can also facilitate connections to Dr. Wang Ling for online or offline consultations and medical services.
Users can easily access the service by searching for “Renowned Doctor AI Medical Assistant” within the Ping An Health app or by entering the Renowned Doctor Expert Zone via the Ping An Health app or Mini Program homepage.
